Date: December 10, 2012
Time: Approx: 9:30 p.m.
Yes, I saw one of these. I took my pug out last night (December 10, 2012) around 9:30 p.m. or so (closer to 9:40 p.m. I think). I looked up (towards the northeast) and saw this very strong, orange light in the sky under the clouds.
I knew it was not a star, as it was too bright, and of course, the cloud cover. When I looked directly at it, it was so bright, it had a flare to it. I wanted to take a picture, but my camera does not take night pictures.
Still, I went inside and got my camera phone. When I came back out a minute later, the light was a lot dimmer and appeared to be going up into the cloud cover.

In a few seconds it had faded away.
It never moved except when it seemed to go into the clouds.
There was no helicopter sounds and the light was not like the helicopter lights I see here. It was not a small aircraft. It was not an airplane or jet at all from what I could tell.
I did hear a heavy rumbling in the air similar to military or low flying commercial aircraft. The only time I see military craft here is on national holidays.
Albany has a small airport for single engine private planes, nothing that military or commercial aircraft could use. And this light was not over that direction. I was reminded of watching a rocket take off almost.
It was remarkable to me in that I have watched the aircraft fly overheard here for years.
I have seen all manner of large and small craft. And this didn't seen to fit any of them.
I thought maybe a flare had been dropped until it went into the clouds. The effect of going into the clouds could have been an optical illusion I suppose. Would be great to find out just what it was.

keWe saw the same thing just after 12 am last night in Albany. It was bright and orange. Bigger than plane or satellite lights. It was towards the SW and then quickly moved SW till it disappeared.
