My family and I saw this as well. I saw it begin with a small spark then a large fireball.
We thought it was a crashing plane because there were red blinking lights at the head.
It first nose dived then leveled out. It dropped one of the fireballs and then a few seconds later the second one. It appeared that a helicopter or plane flew away as the two fireballs began to glide downward in a spiral pattern.
This appeared too controlled to be debris from a plane on fire.

At exactly the same time my friend and I were walking down el cajon Blvd headed towards college ave. When we saw the fireball/golden comet looking object. My first thought was the same as yours, a crashing plane. But then it separated from what appeared be a small plane or helicopter. The movements were too controlled to be anything just falling. It stopped hovered moved towards again then went diagonally. I've never seen anything like it and I really want to know what it was.
