Amber Colored Lights Spotted In The Sky Over Lutz Florida

Date:  December 25, 2012
Time:  Approx: 10:00 p.m

Brian, add this sighting to the growing list of strange lights observed by many Christmas eve.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. on December 24, 2012 while walking the dog in our residential community in Lutz, Florida, my wife and I observed a steady, bright amber light travelling in the sky from our right (due south) to our left (due north).

It caught our attention because there were no other lights associated with this solitary amber light as it passed silently overhead, that is, no wing, tail or other fuselage lights that are always visible on commercial and private aircraft.

As the object moved north of our position the amber light gradually diminished in intensity until it disappeared, altogether. Then to our surprise, a second amber light appeared to our right tracking directly behind the first object.

It too gradually disappeared from view as it passed silently overhead and to our left on its track north. I'd estimate the altitude of the objects at 5 - 10 thousand feet and the brightness at + first magnitude.

Skies here in west-central Florida were relatively clear Christmas eve. And I know my night sky, so there's no confusing these objects with planet Jupiter or meteors. Each object was in view for about a minute.

I might add that if you extend the tracks these objects were following to the south of Lutz and over Tampa, the extended track comes very close to MacDill AFB, home of CentCom. I wonder if MacDill picked them up on radar? That, of course, we'll never know.

If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.

Also, please feel free to send in your sightings that have happened years ago. So many of these older sightings are nothing short of amazing.

I saw the same type of lights last night 2/6/13. Moving from north of Van Dyke Road going south east. Bright amber lights with a slightly erratic path. The further south they went (and there was at least 12 sited) the dimmer they got. The were moving much faster then the wind (there wasn't much anyway) but slower than aircraft in the area.

My husband and I reside in Lutz and we saw an amber light on Saturday, July 6th at approx 10:30. We were looking in the sky watching some nearby fireworks that were still going off. At first we thought it might just be a firework but it was slowly ascending up at an angle and it leveled out then headed slowly toward MacDill. We went to the front yard to get another view then it disappeared.
