I saw the same thing. I thought I was tripping, but My friend was walking beside me.
I saw it before it broke up and scattered. It was a orange light and broke into 3, 1 went up, 1 went down and then the main one went straight in the middle.
The one that went up and down, disappeared after seconds, but the middle one waited a little bit and then flickered and disappeared.
Sorry for bad grammar. It was really exciting and I didn't know what it was, but it was weird like something burning up in the astrosphere.

I saw it last night too over in the bed stuy area every one think I'm going crazy I was too scared to record
In the Netherlands over the city of Leiden, in February 2012, I saw exactly the same phenomenon. Orange light splitting up in three parts going off in different directions.
