At 8:00 p.m. EDT in Louisville Kentucky (12/31/2012) for 90 seconds, I saw a bright red/orange light travel slowly from southwest to northeast.
The cloud cover was low last night (elevation-5000 to 6000 feet) object looked to be less than half mile from my viewpoint.
Seemed to be hovering just above the bottom of the clouds as the light was very bright, it also had a slight milky or clouded appearance. After 90 seconds of movement, the light quickly became very small and yet more intense and then was not visible.

Okay that's creepy. I was trying to find if anyone else had seem a rather large, fiery orange ball in the sky last night (Dec. 31st, 2013), and saw this. Posted the same night, a year ago. What the heck is it???
