Shape of objects: Triangular.
Weather Conditions: Cold w/high overcast, haze.
Description: While driving alone from La Quinta to Monterey St/Dinah Shore Drive in Palm Desert I noticed an object moving slowly from east to west approximately 1,500 AGL. The shape was defined by bright white lights along the outboard edges, approximately 9 in all. The object passed overhead at an almost vertical angle. A few moments later I noticed three of the same objects flying in formation. One of the triangles left the formation and ascended above and in front of the other two. The objects would occasionally strobe from white to red lights. Looking in a 360 degree radius I could see at least six similar objects in the sky in each quadrant, separated by many miles.
At this time I picked up my 9 y.o. daughter, who also witnessed the objects on the drive back. At times, the objects seemed to remain stationary, and the white lights would flash a couple times to a brilliant intensity. I couldn't discern any noise or sound.
The whole episode was odd. The PS Int'l Film Festival is going on and I wondered if it might be some sort of stunt to promote a movie using conventional aircraft or helicopters, but this wasn't obvious.
