My son and I saw something very similar tonight (approx 10:30 p.m.) in Batavia, IL while on our way back from Marmion Academy's homecoming game.
We were traveling north on Route 25 on a hazy night (full moon, but not many stars visible) when I spotted several large orange star-like objects arranged in a pattern that looked like the big dipper orientated almost vertically low in the sky to the northwest.
Only I was certainly not looking at the big dipper. These objects were the only thing visible in the sky except for the moon. Definitely not airplanes as they were hovering and the lights were not blinking like a planes NAV lights do.
I thought maybe a group of helicopters so I pulled over and rolled down my window.
No sound whatsoever. Not helicopters, not stars, not planes. I couldn't figure out what the hell we were looking at. And these objects were right there plain as day.
Really the only thing visible in the sky. I grabbed my I-Phone to take some pictures.
Then they started to quickly disappear one at a time until finally only one remained which then seemed to turn white and then disappear.
I did get a short video (attached) and a couple of pictures. The video and pictures make the objects appear white, but they were as orange as orange gets. Also about half the objects had disappeared by the time I could get the phone trained on them.
Truly one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen.

I actually saw the same phenomenon here in Westland, MI tonight 9/29/PM at around 8:55 PM, I was leaving work and when I pulled out of our parking lot, I saw a series of lights orange/reddish in color to the west, it's a full moon no clouds in the sky. There is an airport about 15 miles south, so my first thought was they were just planes. But the objects were maneuvering to fast for a plane, they seem to line up and move around in different formations. I searched the web if there was any reports and so far this is the only site that has reports similar to what I've seen.
