I witnessed the same thing earlier tonight. I did not see it split. It remained one huge falling ball of fire with a tail, falling straight down in the sky.
The sun had set, but there was still plenty of light out. It fell really slow and was much to large to be a shooting star.
What was this? I tried finding info online, but I cannot find anyone else who has seen this.
