They were flying lanterns released for a Chinese New Year celebration:
Additional Information and Photo:
Brian, we released about 15 sky lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Years at about 10:30 p.m. (I think) on Saturday 2/5/11.
We are about 0.5 miles due west from the Square. They were gorgeous, each carrying a wish for the New Year.
They achieved pretty high altitude, and I can definitely understand that without any context, these lanterns could've been pretty eerie.
They drifted mainly East over the square and probably burned for 5-10 minutes. I attached some pictures.
I wish you prosperity for the new lunar year!
